Una Storia Italiana a Venezia

Birra Moretti L'authentia, ricetta dal 1859 - la birra de Yuengling in Venezia. Per human tendency, one compares new with what they know. After trying and thus seeing Birra Moretti's brewskis all around me, I'd equate it similarly to a Yuengling (I'm a central-PA gal after all) albeit a bit smoother in taste. Interestingly enough, Yuengling was founded before Birra Moretti - gotta tie in that good ol' history lesson in there.

Italy is renowned for its fines wines, exquisite fashion labels, and pasta so fresh you swear you can feel your taste buds perform jumping jacks in ecstasy. I felt as though my beer-venture might be one in vain but was pleasantly surprised in my findings. Similarly to US supermarkets, the local COOP grocery store proved to be invaluable in finding new brews to find in single bottles and cans.

As a traveler, trying local cuisine and immersing in the culture, interacting with locals to truly get a better appreciation for a new location - these are the best parts of travel and exploration. Hell, even going out and exploring one's own local surroundings can be just as invigorating. We become so set in our ways that plunking ourselves in a completely foreign surrounding/atmosphere can feel so refreshing for the mind.

As such...do as the locals do: go to the damn grocery store. Visiting grocery stores has become one of my favorite activities on my trips. I bought a durable reusable grocery bag since I forgot to pack one of mine and ambled into the beautiful display of beers. Not only does the grocery store provide snackies for the road and often has more local brews than the nearby restaurants, it's also a heck of a lot cheaper than eating out for every meal or bar-hopping.

I'm a sucker for Kinder Bueno bars so naturally, I bought a few of those to fuel me in between rounds of pizza and spaghetti in addition to the couple of beers to take back to the hotel to enjoy in a recovery bath and get my mind/body over the jetlag hump to better enjoy the rest of the trip.

  • Vivi Verde Lager by Biologica : subtle taste to start unwinding for the night
  • Nastro Azzuro by Birra Peroni - another Peroni and it did not disappoint
  • La Trappe Tripel by Bierbrouwerij De Konigshoeven : a Belgian Tripel boasting of 8% ABV from the Netherlands. It kicked a punch of flavor without tasting too boozy as some beers with higher alcohol levels tend to do
  • Willianbau Beer by Brouwerij Martens : a Belgian lager that has a sweeter taste than one might expect from a lager and certainly feels much lighter overall
Ciao, Venice, off to Florence in the morning!

In cervisia veritas.
